DPDP Action Sheet

Use this before your next workflow goes live. It keeps the useful parts visible and turns DPDP into checks your team can actually answer.

For DPDP for Farm Input Marketplaces, the DPDP question is how personal data enters the workflow, where it is stored, which tools touch it, what purpose was explained, and how deletion or withdrawal will work.

1. Lead Forms

Check:

  • What data are you collecting?
  • Is the purpose clear at the point of collection?
  • Is marketing consent separate from service communication?
  • Can the user withdraw consent later?

Common mistake: one checkbox that silently covers newsletters, sales calls, partner sharing and remarketing.

2. Email and WhatsApp

Check:

  • Who is on the list?
  • Where did consent come from?
  • Is the list imported from a vendor, event, webinar, scrape or old CRM?
  • Can you prove the source of consent?

Common mistake: treating every lead as permanently marketable.

3. Ads and Retargeting

Check:

  • Are pixels or ad platforms receiving identifiable user behavior?
  • Are audiences built from customer lists?
  • Are lookalike or remarketing audiences using personal data?

Common mistake: assuming "the ad platform handles it" means your company has no DPDP responsibility.

4. Website Analytics

Check:

  • Which tools run on the site?
  • Are IP address, device identifiers, session IDs or form fields being captured?
  • Is analytics used only for measurement, or also for profiling and targeting?

Common mistake: installing tools first and asking privacy questions later.

5. Vendor List

Make a quick list:

  • CRM
  • Email platform
  • WhatsApp provider
  • Analytics
  • Ad pixels
  • Form tool
  • Landing page builder
  • Webinar tool

For each vendor, answer: what data goes there, why, who can access it and how deletion works.

6. This Week's Action

Map one campaign from first click to final follow-up. Mark every place personal data is collected, enriched, shared, uploaded or used for targeting.

If your team cannot answer where the data came from and where it goes next, start with a data flow map before rewriting policy copy.

Farm input marketplaces process high volumes of rural data to facilitate sales of seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides. Our gap assessment for agri-tech platforms takes four weeks. Full implementation of privacy controls takes two to three months, ending with a final assessment.

Farmer Identity and Subsidy Verification

Marketplaces often collect Aadhaar or government IDs to verify farmer status for subsidized inputs. Under DPDP, this identity data cannot be used for unrelated marketing without separate consent. If you collect an ID for a seed subsidy, you cannot use that same ID to build a credit profile unless the farmer explicitly agrees to that second purpose. Every identity document stored in your database must be linked to a specific, consented use case.

Land Records and Geolocation Data

Selling inputs requires knowing the farm’s location and soil health. Geodata linked to a specific farmer is personal data. Many marketplaces pull land records from state databases to verify acreage. This data flow requires a notice to the farmer explaining exactly why their land details are being accessed. You must also list any third-party soil testing labs or drone operators that will receive this location data.

Credit Data and Lending Partners

Marketplaces often partner with lenders to offer “buy now, pay later” options. This involves sharing purchase history and crop cycles with financial institutions. DPDP requires a formal contract between the marketplace and the lender. You must ensure the lender does not use the farmer’s contact details for unrelated loans once the input credit is processed.

Inventory every third-party SDK or API integrated into your mobile app. Identify which ones collect GPS or device IDs from farmers and verify if your current privacy notice specifically names these partners.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need consent to pull land records from government APIs?

Yes. Even if land records are in a public registry, your marketplace is a Data Fiduciary collecting them for a commercial purpose. You must provide a notice and obtain clear consent before fetching these records.

Can we store farmer data indefinitely to predict next year's crop cycle?

No. DPDP requires data deletion once the specific purpose is fulfilled. You must define a retention period for seasonal advisory and delete the personal data if the farmer stops using the platform.

How do we handle consent for farmers who cannot read digital notices?

The Act allows farmers to provide consent through clear affirmative actions. Your field agents or app interface must explain the notice in the farmer's local language and record their digital thumbprint or checkbox selection.
