DPDP Action Sheet

Use this before your next workflow goes live. It keeps the useful parts visible and turns DPDP into checks your team can actually answer.

For DPDP for Loan Collection Platforms, the DPDP question is how personal data enters the workflow, where it is stored, which tools touch it, what purpose was explained, and how deletion or withdrawal will work.

1. Lead Forms

Check:

  • What data are you collecting?
  • Is the purpose clear at the point of collection?
  • Is marketing consent separate from service communication?
  • Can the user withdraw consent later?

Common mistake: one checkbox that silently covers newsletters, sales calls, partner sharing and remarketing.

2. Email and WhatsApp

Check:

  • Who is on the list?
  • Where did consent come from?
  • Is the list imported from a vendor, event, webinar, scrape or old CRM?
  • Can you prove the source of consent?

Common mistake: treating every lead as permanently marketable.

3. Ads and Retargeting

Check:

  • Are pixels or ad platforms receiving identifiable user behavior?
  • Are audiences built from customer lists?
  • Are lookalike or remarketing audiences using personal data?

Common mistake: assuming "the ad platform handles it" means your company has no DPDP responsibility.

4. Website Analytics

Check:

  • Which tools run on the site?
  • Are IP address, device identifiers, session IDs or form fields being captured?
  • Is analytics used only for measurement, or also for profiling and targeting?

Common mistake: installing tools first and asking privacy questions later.

5. Vendor List

Make a quick list:

  • CRM
  • Email platform
  • WhatsApp provider
  • Analytics
  • Ad pixels
  • Form tool
  • Landing page builder
  • Webinar tool

For each vendor, answer: what data goes there, why, who can access it and how deletion works.

6. This Week's Action

Map one campaign from first click to final follow-up. Mark every place personal data is collected, enriched, shared, uploaded or used for targeting.

If your team cannot answer where the data came from and where it goes next, start with a data flow map before rewriting policy copy.

Loan collection platforms manage debt recovery by connecting lenders with field agents and tele-callers. These platforms process high volumes of borrower data, including payment history, sensitive financial status, and real-time movement logs of recovery staff.

Scannable Compliance Checks

  • Audit your mobile application to ensure field agents cannot download borrower contact lists to their personal devices.
  • Review call center scripts to ensure agents do not disclose borrower debt details to third parties or neighbors.
  • Verify that “skip tracing” workflows only use data points authorized in the original loan agreement.
  • Confirm that GPS tracking for field agents is limited to the duration of the assigned recovery task.
  • Ensure all third-party recovery agencies (TPAs) have signed data processing contracts that forbid them from using borrower data for other clients.

Common Industry Mistakes

  • Contact Scraping: Extracting a borrower’s entire contact list from their phone to use for social pressure is a high-risk violation.
  • Permanent Storage: Keeping data on “Settled” or “Written Off” accounts indefinitely without a defined legal justification.
  • Unsecured Agent Access: Allowing field agents to view full borrower profiles including Aadhaar or bank details that are not necessary for a simple home visit.

The Retention Conflict

Loan platforms often keep call recordings forever to defend against harassment complaints. However, DPDP requires data deletion once the purpose is fulfilled. Platforms must now implement a specific retention policy that purges recordings and location history after a set period following the “No Dues Certificate” issuance.

This week

Review your agent mobile app permissions and remove any access to “Personal Contacts” or “Files/Media” that allows agents to store borrower data locally.

Need help applying this to your business? Review the consulting scope and bring the systems, teams, and data flows involved to your first call. If you already have a gap assessment, see implementation support.

Frequently asked questions

Can we still call a borrower's emergency contacts for recovery?

You can only contact individuals listed as references if the original consent notice explicitly stated their data would be used for recovery. You cannot use contacts scraped from the borrower's phone book.

Do we need to delete call recordings after a loan is settled?

Yes. Once the debt is paid and the 'purpose' of collection is fulfilled, you must delete recordings unless a specific financial regulation requires a longer retention period for audits.

Are field agents allowed to take photos of a borrower’s home?

Agents can capture photos only if it is strictly necessary to prove a visit happened. These images must be uploaded directly to the secure platform and not stored in the agent's personal phone gallery.
