DPDP Action Sheet
Use this before your next workflow goes live. It keeps the useful parts visible and turns DPDP into checks your team can actually answer.
For DPDP Consent Redesign Guide, the DPDP question is how personal data enters the workflow, where it is stored, which tools touch it, what purpose was explained, and how deletion or withdrawal will work.
1. Lead Forms
Check:
- What data are you collecting?
- Is the purpose clear at the point of collection?
- Is marketing consent separate from service communication?
- Can the user withdraw consent later?
Common mistake: one checkbox that silently covers newsletters, sales calls, partner sharing and remarketing.
2. Email and WhatsApp
Check:
- Who is on the list?
- Where did consent come from?
- Is the list imported from a vendor, event, webinar, scrape or old CRM?
- Can you prove the source of consent?
Common mistake: treating every lead as permanently marketable.
3. Ads and Retargeting
Check:
- Are pixels or ad platforms receiving identifiable user behavior?
- Are audiences built from customer lists?
- Are lookalike or remarketing audiences using personal data?
Common mistake: assuming "the ad platform handles it" means your company has no DPDP responsibility.
4. Website Analytics
Check:
- Which tools run on the site?
- Are IP address, device identifiers, session IDs or form fields being captured?
- Is analytics used only for measurement, or also for profiling and targeting?
Common mistake: installing tools first and asking privacy questions later.
5. Vendor List
Make a quick list:
- CRM
- Email platform
- WhatsApp provider
- Analytics
- Ad pixels
- Form tool
- Landing page builder
- Webinar tool
For each vendor, answer: what data goes there, why, who can access it and how deletion works.
6. This Week's Action
Map one campaign from first click to final follow-up. Mark every place personal data is collected, enriched, shared, uploaded or used for targeting.
If your team cannot answer where the data came from and where it goes next, start with a data flow map before rewriting policy copy.

Granular Purpose Mapping
DPDP requires consent to be specific. Most “Accept All” checkboxes fail this test. Every data field must link to a specific purpose. If you collect a phone number for OTPs, you cannot use it for marketing unless the user checks a separate box for that specific purpose. Redesigning your forms means removing pre-ticked boxes and ensuring each request stands alone.
Withdrawal Mechanics and UI
Withdrawing consent must be as easy as giving it. If a user clicks one button to opt-in, they should not have to email support to opt-out. Redesign your profile settings to include a “Manage Consent” dashboard. This dashboard must allow users to see what they agreed to and toggle permissions off individually. This action must trigger a technical stop on data processing for that specific purpose.
Consent Management Workflows
| Interaction Point | Data Involved | DPDP Compliance Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Signup Screen | Name, Phone, Email | High (Purpose Creep) |
| Marketing Opt-in | Communication preferences | Medium (Non-granular) |
| Profile Dashboard | Permission toggles | High (Sync lag) |
| Support Chat | Transcripts, identity data | Medium (Excessive retention) |
| Account Deletion | All PII and identifiers | High (Residual data) |
Unbundling Legacy Consent
The most common conflict in Indian apps is “bundled consent.” Legacy systems often combine Terms of Service, Privacy Policies, and marketing permissions into a single click. DPDP demands these be unbundled. Your UI must separate the legal agreement to use the service from the specific consent to process personal data.
This week
Audit your primary signup flow and identify every checkbox. Ensure no boxes are pre-checked and that each one describes only one singular purpose. Remove any language that forces a user to agree to marketing in order to use the basic service.
Now think about your work. Where does personal data enter your workflows? Where does it sit? Who else touches it?
Frequently asked questions
Can I bundle multiple purposes into one 'I Agree' button?
No. DPDP requires consent to be specific and granular. You must provide separate opt-ins for different activities, such as core service delivery versus promotional marketing.
Do I need to translate my consent notice into local languages?
Yes. The notice must be available in English and any of the 22 languages specified in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution of India that the user chooses.
How fast must I stop processing data after a user withdraws consent?
You must stop processing within a reasonable time. Your technical backend should automate the cessation of data flows immediately upon a user revoking their permission.
