DPDP Action Sheet
Use this before your next workflow goes live. It keeps the useful parts visible and turns DPDP into checks your team can actually answer.
For All-in-One DPDP Compliance for NBFCs, the DPDP question is how personal data enters the workflow, where it is stored, which tools touch it, what purpose was explained, and how deletion or withdrawal will work.
1. Lead Forms
Check:
- What data are you collecting?
- Is the purpose clear at the point of collection?
- Is marketing consent separate from service communication?
- Can the user withdraw consent later?
Common mistake: one checkbox that silently covers newsletters, sales calls, partner sharing and remarketing.
2. Email and WhatsApp
Check:
- Who is on the list?
- Where did consent come from?
- Is the list imported from a vendor, event, webinar, scrape or old CRM?
- Can you prove the source of consent?
Common mistake: treating every lead as permanently marketable.
3. Ads and Retargeting
Check:
- Are pixels or ad platforms receiving identifiable user behavior?
- Are audiences built from customer lists?
- Are lookalike or remarketing audiences using personal data?
Common mistake: assuming "the ad platform handles it" means your company has no DPDP responsibility.
4. Website Analytics
Check:
- Which tools run on the site?
- Are IP address, device identifiers, session IDs or form fields being captured?
- Is analytics used only for measurement, or also for profiling and targeting?
Common mistake: installing tools first and asking privacy questions later.
5. Vendor List
Make a quick list:
- CRM
- Email platform
- WhatsApp provider
- Analytics
- Ad pixels
- Form tool
- Landing page builder
- Webinar tool
For each vendor, answer: what data goes there, why, who can access it and how deletion works.
6. This Week's Action
Map one campaign from first click to final follow-up. Mark every place personal data is collected, enriched, shared, uploaded or used for targeting.
If your team cannot answer where the data came from and where it goes next, start with a data flow map before rewriting policy copy.

Managing Loan Files and Bureau Pulls
NBFCs process high volumes of sensitive financial data through digital and physical channels. Every loan file contains identity proofs, bank statements, and income records. When you pull a credit report from a bureau, you create a new data record that links a borrower’s identity to their financial history. Under DPDP, you must track where these files are stored and who can access them. Digital records in a Loan Management System (LMS) must have access logs, while physical files in local branches require secure storage and disposal policies.
Field Agents and Physical Data Risks
Field agents collect personal data at the borrower’s doorstep. This includes photographs of the residence, family details, and location data. Agents often use mobile apps or physical forms to record this information. The risk is high because data often sits on an agent’s personal phone or in an unsecured folder. You must ensure that agents only collect data necessary for the loan appraisal. Once the verification is complete, the data should move to the central server and be removed from the agent’s local device.
NBFC Data Flow Risks
| Workflow | Personal Data Involved | DPDP Risk Level |
|---|---|---|
| Digital Sourcing | Aadhaar, PAN, Bank Statements, UPI ID | High |
| Bureau Pulls | Credit Scores, Payment History, Existing Loans | Medium |
| Field Verification | Live Location, House Photos, Family Details | Very High |
| Debt Recovery | Delinquency Status, Secondary Contact Numbers | High |
| Customer Support | Call Recordings, Complaint History | Medium |
Debt Recovery and Third-Party Sharing
Recovery is the most sensitive area for NBFC compliance. Sharing borrower lists with third-party collection agencies makes you responsible for their actions. If an agent contacts a borrower’s neighbor or relative using data from the loan file, it may constitute a purpose violation. Your contracts with recovery agencies must strictly limit data usage to the specific loan recovery task. You must also have a process to delete this data from the agency’s system once the account is settled or the contract ends.
This week
Identify all third-party recovery agencies and field verification vendors. Send them a one-page data security questionnaire asking how they store borrower data and how they delete it after the task is finished.

Frequently asked questions
Can we use loan application data for cross-selling insurance?
Only if the borrower gave specific, informed consent for insurance marketing. You cannot bundle this consent with the primary loan agreement. Each purpose must be clearly listed in the notice.
Are field agents considered Data Processors?
Yes. Third-party agents conducting KYC or physical verification are Data Processors. The NBFC, as the Data Fiduciary, is legally responsible for any data mishandling or unauthorized access by these agents.
Do we need consent for credit bureau pulls?
Yes. While CICs have their own mandates, the initial collection of data for the pull requires a DPDP-compliant notice. The borrower must know their data is being shared with bureaus for credit assessment.
